Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has urged the club to consider a swap deal involving Marcus Rashford and AC Milan forward Rafael Leao. Rashford's future remains uncertain after a season-long loan at Barcelona, where he helped the Catalan club win La Liga. Barcelona have an option to make the move permanent, but it is unclear if they will activate it.
Rashford's Desire to Stay at Barcelona
Rashford has expressed a wish to remain at the Camp Nou, stating after securing the Spanish title: "I don't know. I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. So we will see." However, Stam believes a move to Italy could be on the cards.
Stam's Swap Proposal
Speaking to ComeOn, Stam said: "Maybe a swap between Rafael Leao and Marcus Rashford could work. Leao is also a good player. He has shown his potential at Milan, of course, in what he can do. I think he is a player that should be on the list of targets for Manchester United."
Stam emphasised the importance of considering not just skill but also mentality: "Having said that, you need to have a look not only at the skill of a player, but also at the mentality of players. You need to consider the situation where the club is, what player they are bringing in that is going to help the club going forward, so that you don’t get any irritations from players who are not being picked to start. We’ve seen that that can create a kind of a stir within the dressing room. So you need to have a look at the personality of players, at the whole picture, and what’s the best player to bring into the club."
Leao's Contract Situation
Leao is expected to leave AC Milan this summer, with only one year remaining on his contract. Reports in Italy suggest United are considering a move for the Portuguese winger. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has previously praised Leao, calling him a "phenomenon" and expressing hope that he would develop further.
Fernandes said of his compatriot: "I met him as a kid at Sporting; he came up to the first team with me. He is a boy with an enormous talent that we all hope will become stronger every time because we know how much talent he has. He has had his moments, but I still believe that he is a phenomenon player who can give us (Portugal) something more."
