Man Utd's Murillo Transfer Bid Faces Hurdle as Defender Dreams of Rivals
Man Utd's Murillo transfer faces Man City, Liverpool hurdle

Manchester United's plans to sign Nottingham Forest defender Murillo this summer have hit a significant snag, after the Brazilian's past comments expressing a desire to play for their biggest rivals came to light.

United's Defensive Search

The Red Devils are targeting a summer move for the 23-year-old centre-back as they prepare for the departure of Harry Maguire, whose contract expires in June 2026. Murillo, who joined Forest from Corinthians for £10million in 2023, has impressed during his 96 appearances for the club and is seen as a viable long-term option.

Despite signing a new deal with Forest just a year ago, the player is understood to be open to leaving the City Ground at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. Forest's precarious position—17th in the Premier League and on their third manager of the season—means they may struggle to retain key assets, especially if they fail to qualify for Europe.

Murillo's Revealing Admission

The major complication for United stems from an interview Murillo gave a year ago on the Benja Me Mucho podcast. In it, he outlined his career ambitions, which did not include a move to Old Trafford.

"I had the dream of playing in the Premier League," Murillo said. "I thought, 'I'll go to Nottingham Forest, have a good year and then I'll go to a big club'... I'd choose Manchester City." He also named Arsenal and Liverpool as attractive destinations, citing their status as title contenders.

This revelation presents a clear obstacle for United's recruitment team, who must now convince a player of a rival move while potentially competing with those very clubs for his signature.

A Crowded Transfer Race

Competition for Murillo's signature is expected to be fierce. Liverpool were strongly linked with the defender back in January 2025 and will again be in the market for centre-backs, with Ibrahima Konate's deal expiring. Manchester City, whom Murillo named as his preferred choice, could also enter the fray as they manage defensive injuries.

United's own ability to attract top talent could be hampered if they fail to secure European qualification under manager Michael Carrick. The club is also reportedly keen on Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, indicating a broader interest in the squad.

Forest have previously shown resilience in keeping their star, having rejected a 'club-record offer' from Chelsea last year. However, the financial pressures of the Premier League and the player's ambitions may force their hand this summer, with a fee likely to far exceed the £35m that Liverpool saw collapse for Marc Guehi.
