Napoli Chief Admits Concerns Over Scott McTominay Future

Napoli's global business development officer, Leonardo Giammarioli, has openly expressed his apprehension about the club's ability to retain midfielder Scott McTominay in the long term. The Scottish international has flourished since his departure from Manchester United in 2024, becoming a pivotal figure for the Italian side.

McTominay's Impressive Impact at Napoli

Since joining Napoli, McTominay has made a significant mark, featuring in 69 appearances across all competitions and netting an impressive 22 goals. His contributions were instrumental in Napoli's Serie A title triumph last season, showcasing his development into a top-tier midfielder in one of Europe's most competitive leagues.

However, recent speculation has linked McTominay with a potential return to his former club, Manchester United, with several high-profile figures urging the Red Devils to consider re-signing the player.

Financial Realities and Serie A Challenges

In an interview with talkSPORT, Giammarioli highlighted the broader financial constraints facing Serie A clubs. "It's a bit complicated for Serie A and our competitive clubs...the league is still making losses in revenue," he explained. "Of course, it's hard to keep up with the other big four leagues, but we're trying to improve and be competitive."

Giammarioli emphasised the difficulty in retaining top talent, noting, "Keeping players is difficult, it wasn't easy to get them, it's even harder to keep them. We need to be smart about our signings...every bit of money we spend must count."

Potential Transfer Scenarios and Player Desires

The Napoli executive acknowledged that the club might be powerless to reject a substantial offer, especially if McTominay expresses a desire to move. "Yeah, of course I'm worried," Giammarioli admitted. "But ultimately, especially Scott, who's a very nice guy, we're happy if he gets to the next level in a couple of years – maybe not now, maybe not next year, but he deserves it."

He drew a parallel with other clubs, stating, "Look at Stuttgart, they wanted to keep Nick Woltemade, but when such an offer comes in, there's not much you can do, when the player wants to go and money is important."

Manchester United Links and External Opinions

Former Manchester United star Teddy Sheringham has been among those advocating for McTominay's return to Old Trafford. Sheringham recently asserted, "If he comes back to England, then there's no way Manchester United can miss out on him. He simply cannot come back to the Premier League without going to Manchester United. That would be a travesty. That cannot happen."

McTominay's current contract with Napoli runs until 2028, providing the club with some security, but the financial allure of a Premier League return could prove compelling.

Napoli's Current Campaign and Future Plans

As Napoli prepare for their upcoming match against Genoa, they find themselves nine points adrift in the Serie A title race. Despite this, the club continues to plan for the future, with reports suggesting they are in talks to sign former Premier League winger Raheem Sterling following his exit from Chelsea.

The situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Serie A clubs in retaining their star players amid the financial dominance of leagues like the Premier League.
