Sandro Tonali's Clear Transfer Intentions Amid Arsenal Deadline Day Speculation

Sandro Tonali has consistently maintained his focus on Newcastle United, even as Arsenal were linked with a shock move for the midfielder on transfer deadline day. The Italian international's commitment to the Magpies remains steadfast, despite ongoing speculation about his future.

Arsenal's Reported Interest Quickly Dismissed

Sky Sport Germany initially reported that Arsenal were exploring a surprise move for the Newcastle United midfielder ahead of the transfer window's closure. It was claimed the Premier League leaders had made an initial enquiry for the 25-year-old, who joined Newcastle in summer 2023 for a reported £55 million.

However, multiple outlets including Sky Sports News have since dismissed these claims entirely. Newcastle United have reportedly received no contact from Arsenal and aren't anticipating any bid for their influential midfielder. Tonali remains under contract at St James' Park until summer 2029, with the club holding an option to extend the deal by an additional year.

Tonali's Consistent Position on His Future

The Italian midfielder, who ranks among Eddie Howe's most important players, has always maintained his contentment in the north east. Despite this, he has openly discussed the possibility of returning to AC Milan at some point in the future on multiple occasions.

Tonali's departure from the Serie A giants in 2023 came as a surprise to many, particularly as he was viewed by some as a potential future club captain at San Siro. In early 2025, he dismissed reports linking him with a move to Juventus and insisted he wasn't seeking a transfer, though he acknowledged having "unfinished business" in Milan.

The Player's Own Words on His Situation

Tonali explained his perspective in detail, stating: "I've grown, discovered a new country, a new style of football and a new language. I have no regrets. The idea of returning to Milan one day is there but it's not the first thing on my mind when I wake up in the morning."

He continued: "My agents and I have never even talked about it [Juventus interest]. And I know from experience that if you don't reach that stage, there's nothing concrete. Besides, I feel good here. I've found my path and there's no need to disrupt it again. I want to win for Newcastle fans; soon, we'll have our first chance at Wembley."

Instrumental Role and Continued Commitment

Tonali proved instrumental in ending Newcastle's lengthy trophy drought shortly after these comments, helping secure victory against Liverpool in the EFL Cup final. Despite this success, he later reiterated his openness to a potential San Siro return while emphasising his current satisfaction at Newcastle.

He told Vivo Azzurro: "You can never know what will happen, I tell everyone it's possible. I'm not closing the door on Italy; it's my country. Maybe not now because I've found my balance at Newcastle but the league is getting better and better, the level of the teams is rising."

The Telegraph has reported that Tonali has little desire to leave the Premier League side, attributing his strong commitment to the unwavering support he received from Newcastle during his ten-month ban for breaching betting rules relating to matches in Italy. This loyalty appears to have strengthened his bond with the club and its supporters.
