Four Newcastle Fan Zones Open for England v Mexico

Four outdoor fan zones in Newcastle have confirmed they will open for England's World Cup last-16 match against Mexico at 1am on Monday, while a fifth venue awaits a licensing decision. The match, taking place at Mexico City's Azteca stadium, poses a significant challenge due to the high altitude of 2,240 metres above sea level.

Confirmed Fan Zones

Both STACK locations—on Pilgrim Street and at St James'—will be open, offering bookable benches for groups of six or more, as well as walk-in access. Frate, situated near the Bigg Market and Grey Street, will also open; guaranteed entry tickets cost £3 and include a pint on arrival, with walk-ins possible on Sunday night. Across the Tyne in Gateshead, Summer on the Southside confirmed on Thursday it will open, operating strictly by ticket only with last entry at midnight. They will also screen the Brazil v Norway game from 9pm, offering a free drink for those arriving before 11.30pm with a ticket.

Awaiting Decision

Times Square, operated by We Are Fan Zones, is still awaiting a license extension. In a statement on Thursday evening, they said: 'We have been working tirelessly for the past months to allow us to apply for a license to extend our hours for such massive national occasions as this, and albeit there is still no firm decision from the local powers, we are hoping that the message from the government today, to allow all licensed premises to screen the game, means that we will have a positive outcome asap, however we're currently none the wiser and will keep you informed asap.'

Match Context

England secured their place in the last 16 with a 2-0 win over Panama in Group L, followed by a comeback victory against DR Congo on Wednesday. Harry Kane scored both goals in the latter match, equalising in the 75th minute from Anthony Gordon's cross and scoring a winner in the 86th minute. The Mexico match is expected to draw large crowds despite the early hour, especially after pubs were granted permission to stay open until 5am for the fixture.
