Potential Backfire of Mandated Reminders

Amid growing concerns about chatbots contributing to mental distress or even psychosis, it has been proposed that these systems should regularly notify users of their non-human nature. However, the new research argues this approach could be counterproductive. Linnea Laestadius, a public health researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, stated in a release, "It would be a mistake to assume that mandated reminders will significantly reduce risks for users who knowingly seek out a chatbot for conversation." She added that such reminders might make individuals feel even more alone by highlighting the lack of human connection.

Context of Chatbot-Related Incidents

This warning emerges against a backdrop of reports linking AI chatbots to severe outcomes, including instances of murder and suicide. The obliging and unpredictable nature of these systems has led to accusations that they may encourage delusions or worsen mental ill health instead of providing support. While some experts have suggested reminders could help by clarifying the chatbot's inability to feel human emotions, the study's authors indicate that evidence does not support this idea.

Reasons for Chatbot Attachment

The researchers propose that people might turn to chatbots precisely because they are not human. Celeste Campos-Castillo, a media and technology researcher at Michigan State University, explained, "The belief that, unlike humans, non-humans will not judge, tease, or turn the entire school or workplace against them encourages self-disclosure to chatbots and, subsequently, attachment." This dynamic suggests that reminders could disrupt a perceived safe space, adding another layer of distress to existing concerns.

Need for Targeted Research

Laestadius emphasized the urgency of further investigation, stating, "Discovering how to best remind people that chatbots are not human is a critical research priority. We need to identify when reminders should be sent and when they should be paused to be most protective of user mental health." The study, titled 'Reminders that chatbots are not human are risky', is published in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences, highlighting the complex interplay between technology and psychological well-being.
