The research team identified frequent prompts people input into AI systems, including 'Can you polish this for me' or 'Make my reasoning sound more logical.' These requests demonstrate how users consciously seek standardization. 'The concern extends beyond how LLMs shape writing or speech,' Sourati noted. 'They subtly redefine what counts as credible speech, correct perspective, or even valid reasoning.'

Research Findings on Linguistic Diversity

Multiple studies have demonstrated that chatbot outputs exhibit significantly less variation than human-generated writing. These AI systems predominantly reflect the language patterns, values, and reasoning styles of Western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic societies.

'Because LLMs are trained to capture and reproduce statistical regularities in their training data, which often overrepresent dominant languages and ideologies, their outputs mirror a narrow and skewed slice of human experience,' Sourati elaborated.

The Decline of Cognitive Diversity

Within groups and societies, having individuals who think differently enhances creativity and problem-solving capacity. However, this essential 'cognitive diversity' is diminishing as more people increasingly rely on AI assistance, as documented in the journal Trends in Cognitive Sciences.

Sourati explained the social pressure aspect: 'If many people around me are thinking and speaking in a particular way, and I approach things differently, I would feel compelled to align with them because it appears more credible or socially acceptable.'

Identifying AI-Generated Content

Researchers have identified several indicators of AI-generated text:

  • Inconsistencies and repetition, including abrupt tone shifts
  • Basic, formulaic text structure
  • Inappropriate or incorrect contextual references
  • Excessive use of buzzwords and jargon
  • Unnaturally quick response generation

Previous suggestions for detecting AI content include monitoring for these patterns. Sometimes AI references specific details without proper context or produces text that feels fundamentally generic. The overuse of buzzwords often indicates AI filling knowledge gaps with generic vocabulary, while rapid responses can signal automated generation since humans typically require thinking time.

Detection Tools and User Awareness

Developers have released specialized AI 'detection tools' to identify text generated or enhanced by AI, particularly relevant for academic essays or job applications. A recent preprint study discovered that regular chatbot users can correctly determine whether an article was AI-generated approximately 90 percent of the time.
