Frozen hot water bottle hack 'better than AC' for cooling down at bedtime
Frozen hot water bottle hack 'better than AC' for bedtime

As temperatures across the UK soar, with some areas expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius and a red weather warning in effect, Brits are searching for ways to stay cool without relying on fans or air conditioning. A viral TikTok hack suggests using a frozen hot water bottle as a cooling aid at bedtime, with some users claiming it's "better than air conditioning."

TikTok user shares freezing hack

TikTok user Ames, who shares "tips, tricks, interests and having fun" on her page, posted a video recommending placing a hot water bottle in the freezer to make it cold, then putting it on the body for relief. "This might just be what gets me through the heatwave," she wrote. However, she urged caution: "Make sure you don't fill it completely as water expands when frozen! NOT TO BE USED WITH HOT WATER AGAIN, THOUGH, AS IT WILL SPLIT! Dispose after freezing!!"

Safety warnings and structural risks

Freezing degrades the rubber or PVC of hot water bottles, increasing the risk of bursting or leaking if later used with boiling water. As water freezes, it expands, putting pressure on seams and the stopper seal, warping the material. This compromises the bottle's structural integrity, making it hazardous for hot water use. Experts advise dedicating a separate bottle for cold use only and never reusing it for hot water to avoid severe burns.

User reactions and cost benefits

In the comments, one user wrote: "I've got this ready to put in my bed tonight. I have now dedicated this hot water bottle as my cold water bottle and won't be using it again with hot! Looking forward to a cool sleep tonight!" Another said they've been doing this "since 1976," adding it's "better than having air conditioning" and much cheaper. When asked where to place it, Ames replied: "Put your feet on it! Best way to cool your body down!"

The hack has gained praise as a cost-effective alternative to air conditioning during the heatwave, but safety remains paramount. Will you be trying it?
