Ford Motor Company has announced a substantial safety recall affecting approximately 4.3 million of its popular pickup trucks and SUVs across the United States. The recall stems from a significant software error that could potentially cause trailer brakes to malfunction and exterior lights to fail, thereby elevating the risk of accidents on the road.
Affected Models and Specific Details of the Recall
The extensive recall encompasses a wide range of Ford vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2026. Specifically, it includes the 2021 through 2026 model years of the F-150 pickup truck, the 2022-2026 F-250 Super Duty, along with the Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and Maverick models. Additionally, certain Ranger and E-Transit vehicles are also part of this recall action.
According to Ford, the core issue lies within the Integrated Trailer Module, which may lose communication with the vehicle when towing a trailer. This communication failure can result in a loss of brake function and turn signal lights on the trailer, or a complete failure of the trailer brakes themselves. The company has emphasised that this problem is typically detected when the vehicle is first started, alerting drivers to potential safety concerns early on.
Safety Implications and Regulatory Involvement
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted the severe safety risks associated with this defect. Trailer lights or brakes that do not operate correctly can significantly impair a driver's ability to control the trailer, substantially increasing the likelihood of a collision. Ford has acknowledged 407 incidents that may be related to this recall issue, though the company has stated it is unaware of any crashes directly tied to the problem at this time.
Ford and NHTSA officials discussed the matter during a monthly meeting in December, leading Ford to reopen its investigation in January 2026 to further consider the regulatory agency's perspectives and recommendations.
Resolution Through Over-the-Air Software Update
To address this critical software fault, Ford plans to deploy an over-the-air software update. This modern solution will allow the company to remotely fix the issue without requiring vehicle owners to visit dealerships physically.
