WhatsApp Usernames Arrive to Protect Your Privacy
WhatsApp has confirmed a major update that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers. Starting this week, users can reserve a unique username through the app's settings. The feature, set to roll out gradually over the coming months, aims to address long-standing privacy concerns.
“When someone new walks into your life – a classmate, a neighbour, someone you meet at an event – sharing a phone number can feel like a big step,” WhatsApp explained in its announcement. “That’s because a phone number is personal and it’s tied to so many parts of your life. Sometimes you just want to chat without handing over your digits.”
How to Reserve Your Username
To secure a username, users must update to the latest version of WhatsApp and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The process takes only a few seconds. WhatsApp warns that with over three billion users, many names may overlap, so early reservation is critical.
“Starting this week, you can reserve a username to use later this year when we launch this feature,” WhatsApp added. “With over three billion people on WhatsApp a lot of names overlap, which is why we're opening reservations early so everyone has the opportunity to select the username that matters to them.”
Why This Update Matters
WhatsApp has long been criticized for requiring phone numbers to initiate conversations. This update allows users to join group chats or contact new acquaintances without exposing their personal digits. The feature is optional, meaning users can continue using phone numbers if preferred.
The Meta-owned service has over a billion daily active users worldwide. The username system is expected to enhance privacy, especially in group conversations where participants may be strangers. WhatsApp will notify users when the feature becomes available in their country.
