AI-Generated Images Falsely Link NYC Mayor to Epstein Circle

Multiple photographs circulating online that falsely claim to show New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani as a child with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein have been identified as artificial intelligence fabrications. The images, which also depict the mayor's mother, filmmaker Mira Nair, alongside Epstein's confidant Ghislaine Maxwell and other high-profile figures, were widely shared on social media platforms on Monday.

Digital Watermarks Confirm AI Origin

The images first appeared on an X account explicitly labelled as parody following the Justice Department's release of new Epstein documents on Friday. All the photographs contain clear digital watermarks identifying them as AI-generated content, with Google's Gemini application detecting SynthID watermarks in every image examined. This technology confirms the photographs were either entirely created or significantly altered using Google's artificial intelligence models.

One particularly elaborate fabrication shows Mamdani and Nair positioned at the front of a group photograph featuring Maxwell, Epstein, former President Bill Clinton, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The scene appears to be set on a crowded city street at night, with Mamdani depicted as a preteen or young teenager despite chronological inconsistencies.

Chronological Impossibilities and False Narratives

The AI-generated images have spawned multiple false narratives online, including one particularly egregious claim that Epstein is Mamdani's biological father. This is categorically untrue – Mamdani's father is Mahmood Mamdani, a distinguished anthropology professor at Columbia University. Furthermore, the images depict Mamdani as a baby or young child in scenarios supposedly occurring in 2009, when in reality the mayor was eighteen years old at that time.

Another fabricated photograph shows the same group of individuals, excluding Nair, in what appears to be a tropical setting. In this image, Epstein is pictured holding Clinton in his arms while Maxwell has her arm around a younger-looking Mamdani. Additional circulating images portray Mamdani as an infant being held by his mother while she poses with Epstein, Clinton, Maxwell, and Bezos.

Parody Account Acknowledges Creation

The X account responsible for initially posting the images describes itself as "an AI-powered meme engine" that uses artificial intelligence to create content that is "fast, loud, and impossible to ignore." While an inquiry sent to the account received no response, a subsequent post from the account appears to acknowledge its role in creating the fabricated photographs.

"Damn you guys failed," the post reads. "I purposely made him a baby which would technically make this pic 34 years old. Yikes." This statement suggests the account creator intentionally manufactured chronological impossibilities within the images.

Context and Official Response

The photographs began circulating after an email emerged in which publicist Peggy Siegal wrote to Epstein about seeing various luminaries, including Clinton, Bezos, and Nair, at a 2009 afterparty for a film held at Maxwell's townhouse. It's important to note that none of Epstein's victims have publicly accused Clinton, Gates, or Bezos of involvement in his crimes.

The New York City Mayor's Office has not responded to requests for comment regarding the fabricated images. The rapid spread of these AI-generated photographs highlights growing concerns about digital misinformation and the sophisticated capabilities of artificial intelligence to create convincing but entirely false visual narratives.
