In a profoundly moving act of compassion, Rockstar Games has arranged for a terminally ill fan to play the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 ahead of its official launch next year.
A Heartfelt Plea on LinkedIn
The story began when Anthony Armstrong, a developer at Ubisoft Toronto, shared a personal plea on LinkedIn. He revealed that a close family member, a huge GTA fan, had been battling cancer for years and had recently received a terminal diagnosis. Doctors indicated they had between six and twelve months to live.
With GTA 6 delayed to November 19, 2026, Armstrong feared his relative might not live to see its release. "Best case scenario he will be leaving us the same month it does," he wrote. Noting the fan lived near Rockstar's Oakville studio, Armstrong asked contacts to help set up an exclusive playtest, offering to sign strict NDAs.
The Community Response and Rockstar's Gesture
The gaming community rallied, and several weeks later, Armstrong posted a 'Final Update'. He shared the great news that Rockstar had responded positively, though specifics remained confidential. "We spoke to them today and got great news. That's all I can really say," the update read, expressing deep gratitude. The original LinkedIn post has since been deleted, but screenshots continue to circulate online.
While the exact extent of the gameplay session is unknown, the gesture ensures the fan will experience a part of the game they love before potentially passing away. Neither Rockstar Games nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has publicly commented on the private arrangement.
GTA 6's Development and Release Timeline
This act of kindness occurs against the backdrop of the game's delayed development. Grand Theft Auto 6 was originally slated for 2025, then pushed to May 2026, before its current date of November 19, 2026. Publisher Take-Two Interactive stated the extra time was needed to achieve "the high level of polish players expect and deserve."
With no new trailers recently, some fans speculate about a potential further delay into 2027. However, Rockstar officially maintains its November 2026 window. This early access for a devoted fan suggests development is progressing, offering a rare and human glimpse behind the scenes of one of the gaming world's most secretive projects.
