Android Users Could Receive Payout from $135 Million Google Settlement
Individuals who have used an Android smartphone since 2017 may be eligible to claim a portion of a $135 million settlement with Google. This legal resolution arises from a lawsuit that accused the technology giant of enabling its Android operating system to transmit user information to Google without proper consent.
Background of the Lawsuit and Allegations
The legal action alleged that Android devices were designed to transfer a variety of data to Google in the background, even when phones were completely idle. According to the lawsuit, these transfers occurred without any notice to users and could happen over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The plaintiffs claimed that such activities consumed cellular data on devices, potentially leading to unexpected charges for users.
Google has consistently denied any wrongdoing but agreed to the $135 million settlement to resolve the dispute. Notably, a separate lawsuit for California residents previously resulted in a $350 million settlement, but participants in that case are not eligible for this new settlement.
Eligibility Criteria for the Settlement
To qualify for a payout, consumers must meet specific requirements:
- Be a resident of the United States.
- Have used an Android device with a cellular data plan at any time since November 12, 2017.
It is estimated that approximately 100 million people may be eligible to participate in this settlement. The court has scheduled a final approval hearing for June 23, 2026. If approved, the funds will be distributed to eligible class members, covering attorney fees and court costs as well.
Payment Details and Claim Process
Payments will be issued electronically, though the exact amount each class member will receive has not been disclosed. According to the settlement administrator, Android users included in the claim have been notified via mail or email. Those uncertain about their eligibility can contact the settlement administrator directly at 1-844-655-4255 for clarification.
This settlement highlights ongoing concerns about data privacy in the tech industry, particularly regarding how companies handle user information without explicit permission. As digital devices become more integrated into daily life, such legal actions underscore the importance of transparency and user control over personal data.
