Discord, the widely-used messaging platform favoured by gamers, is set to enforce new age verification rules across the globe starting next month. This initiative forms part of a broader crackdown on privacy and safety concerns, marking a significant shift in how the platform manages user access.
Teen-by-Default Settings Explained
The San Francisco-based company has labelled these measures as 'Teen-by-Default Settings'. Under this system, all Discord accounts will automatically default to a 'teen-appropriate' experience unless users actively verify their age. This means unverified users will face restricted access to age-gated servers and mandatory content filtering that blocks material intended for individuals over 18.
Verification Methods and Privacy Safeguards
According to Discord's official press release, users will have two primary options for age verification: using a facial age estimator or submitting a copy of official identification. The company has indicated that additional verification methods may be introduced in the future. In a move to address previous privacy issues, Discord now promises that facial scans will remain entirely on the user's device, with other identity documents being deleted immediately after age confirmation in most cases.
This approach comes in response to a significant security incident during the initial UK rollout last year, where approximately 70,000 facial scan images potentially leaked. The platform has implemented these new safeguards to prevent similar breaches from occurring as the verification system expands globally.
Advanced Age Inference Technology
Beyond the initial verification process, Discord is deploying sophisticated 'age inference model' technology that continuously monitors account activity in the background. This system estimates whether an account is being used by an adult or teenager, determining how much evidence is required for age verification. The technology represents an additional layer of protection designed to maintain appropriate content access boundaries.
Global Expansion of Safety Measures
These age verification measures initially launched in the United Kingdom and Australia last year following the implementation of the Online Safety Act 2023. Starting in March, Discord will roll out these default settings to territories worldwide, representing a major expansion of their safety architecture.
Savannah Badalich, Head of Product Policy at Discord, emphasised the company's commitment to user safety: "Rolling out teen-by-default settings globally builds on Discord's existing safety architecture, giving teens strong protections while allowing verified adults flexibility. We design our products with teen safety principles at the core and will continue working with safety experts, policymakers, and Discord users to support meaningful, long term wellbeing for teens on the platform."
Platform Transparency and User Experience
Discord has confirmed that users will not be able to see the age verification status of others on the platform, maintaining privacy while enforcing age restrictions. The platform, which boasts over 250 million monthly active users, remains available across multiple devices including PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and mobile platforms. It currently ranks as the fourth most popular free social networking app on iOS, trailing only Threads, WhatsApp, and Telegram.
This global implementation represents Discord's most comprehensive effort to date in balancing platform accessibility with appropriate age-based content restrictions, setting a new standard for safety in social messaging platforms popular among gaming communities.
