UK Data Watchdog Slaps Reddit with £14 Million Fine Over Child Protection Failures
Reddit Fined £14m by UK Watchdog for Failing to Protect Children

UK Data Regulator Imposes Hefty £14 Million Penalty on Reddit

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has levied a substantial £14 million fine against online discussion platform Reddit for serious failures in protecting children's personal information. The investigation revealed that Reddit did not implement proper age verification measures, potentially exposing young users to harmful and inappropriate content.

Inadequate Age Checks Put Children at Risk

The ICO's comprehensive investigation determined that Reddit had failed to establish any robust age assurance mechanism on its platform. This critical oversight meant the company lacked a lawful basis for processing personal information belonging to children under the age of 13. The watchdog specifically criticized Reddit's reliance on self-declaration of age by users, noting this approach was "easy to bypass" and created unacceptable risks for young people.

UK Information Commissioner John Edwards expressed grave concerns about the situation, stating: "It's concerning that a company the size of Reddit failed in its legal duty to protect the personal information of UK children. Children under 13 had their personal information collected and used in ways they could not understand, consent to or control."

Regulatory Warning to Online Platforms

Commissioner Edwards emphasized that companies operating online services likely to be accessed by children bear significant responsibility for implementing proper safeguards. "They need to be confident they know the age of their users and have appropriate, effective age assurance measures in place," he asserted. "Reddit failed to meet these expectations."

The commissioner issued a strong warning to the broader industry, noting that the ICO is now focusing attention on companies primarily relying on self-declaration methods for age verification. "Relying on users to declare their age themselves is not enough when children may be at risk," Edwards cautioned. "I therefore strongly encourage industry to take note, reflect on their practices and urgently make any necessary improvements to their platforms."

Ongoing Scrutiny and Required Improvements

The ICO confirmed it continues to monitor the age assurance controls Reddit has implemented following the investigation. The regulator made clear that the £14 million penalty reflects the seriousness of the platform's failures and serves as a stark reminder to all online service providers about their obligations under UK data protection laws.

This enforcement action represents one of the most significant penalties imposed by the UK data watchdog against a major social media platform for child protection failures. The case highlights growing regulatory scrutiny of how online platforms handle children's data and implement age verification systems in an increasingly digital landscape.
