Former Bethesda Lead Decries Studio as 'Damaged and Broken' After Xbox Merger
Ex-Bethesda Lead Slams Studio as 'Damaged' Post-Xbox Merger

Former Bethesda Executive Speaks Out on Studio's Post-Merger Turmoil

Pete Hines, the former marketing lead at Bethesda, has publicly detailed the reasons behind his departure from the studio in 2023, expressing profound concerns that the iconic gaming company was being 'damaged and broken apart' following its merger with Xbox. In a candid interview, Hines conveyed a sense of helplessness and disillusionment, stating emphatically, 'I am not going to sit here and watch this happen right in front of me.'

A Career Built on Passion and Collaboration

Reflecting on his 24-year tenure at Bethesda, which began in 1999 as a marketing and PR specialist, Hines highlighted the positive aspects of his role. He specifically praised working alongside creative director Todd Howard and Erin Losi, now Bethesda's vice president of global marketing and communications. 'Getting to work with Todd Howard for 24 years was a highlight,' Hines remarked, underscoring the collaborative spirit that once defined the studio.

The Turning Point: Feeling 'Powerless' in a Changing Landscape

However, Hines explained that his decision to leave crystallised when he 'hit a point of realizing I could not spend the rest of my life doing something that wasn't for me.' He described feeling 'powerless' to steer Bethesda in the direction he believed was necessary, lamenting his inability to maintain its status as one of the industry's most efficient publishers. 'When I couldn't protect it, and I saw how it was getting damaged and broken apart and frankly mistreated, abused, whatever word you want to use, I said I am not going to sit here and watch this happen right in front of me,' Hines asserted.

Allusions to Microsoft's Acquisition and Cultural Clash

While Hines did not explicitly name Microsoft's 2021 acquisition of Bethesda as the direct cause of his exit, he strongly alluded to it. He contrasted Bethesda's operational ethos with what he perceived at the merged entity, noting, 'To talk is something, right? But I'm very much about what is the follow up to that? Do you mean what you say? Or are you just saying s**t that sounds good and then as soon as you leave this room that's completely forgotten? Because that is not how we ever operated at Bethesda.' He concluded by stating, 'Truthfully, I still think Bethesda is just part of something that is not authentic and is not genuine. And that shouldn't be a surprise to you.'

Legacy and Future of Bethesda Under Xbox

Hines' departure in 2023 marked the end of an era for a figure instrumental in shipping legendary titles like The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. Bethesda remains a key component of the Xbox Game Studios group, with recent releases including Starfield on PS5 and the highly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6 in development, though a launch date remains unconfirmed. His comments shed light on the internal challenges and cultural shifts that can accompany major corporate mergers in the gaming sector.
