Explosion at GTA 6 Developer's Edinburgh Office

Emergency services were called to the Edinburgh headquarters of Rockstar North, the developer behind the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, following reports of an explosion early on Monday morning. The incident, which occurred at the studio's premises on Holyrood Road, was swiftly addressed by fire crews, with no casualties reported.

Emergency Response and Structural Damage

Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched multiple fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene after being alerted at 5.02am on 19 January. Firefighters worked diligently to secure structural damage at the commercial building, with crews departing at 9.21am once the area was deemed safe.

A spokesperson for SFRS confirmed the deployment, stating, "Operations Control mobilised three fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene, where firefighters worked to secure structural damage at a commercial building. There were no reported casualties and crews left the scene at 9.21am."

Cause of the Explosion

The explosion was attributed to a malfunction with one of the building's heating boilers, according to a company spokesperson. Rockstar North reassured the public that all staff were safe and that the studio remained operational despite the incident.

"Many thanks to those that reached out with concern, and also to the police and fire crews who were on scene quickly to assess the situation," the spokesperson said. "Everyone is well and our studio remains open and operational."

Impact on GTA 6 Development

Rockstar North, a subsidiary of Rockstar Games, is currently in the final stages of developing GTA 6, which has faced multiple delays and is now scheduled for release on 19 November 2026. The game was originally set for a 2025 launch but has been postponed due to production and development challenges.

Strauss Zelnick, chief executive of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar Games' parent company, previously explained the delays, telling IGN, "As we get closer to completion of a title that’s seeking perfection, the needs or lack thereof, for continued polish become clear. In this case there was an opportunity with a small amount of incremental time, we thought, to make sure Rockstar Games achieves its creative vision with no limitations. And I supported (of course) that approach."

Fan Concerns and Reassurances

Following news of the explosion, fans of the Grand Theft Auto franchise expressed concern online, with some joking about further delays. One Instagram user quipped, "We’re never getting this game," highlighting the anticipation and anxiety surrounding the title's release.

However, there has been no indication from Rockstar Games that this incident will impact the scheduled release date. The company has emphasised that operations continue uninterrupted, and the studio is fully functional. The Independent has reached out to Rockstar Games for additional comments, but no further details have been disclosed at this time.

This event underscores the challenges faced by major game developers in maintaining safety and meeting tight deadlines, but Rockstar North's prompt response and lack of injuries suggest minimal disruption to the highly awaited launch of GTA 6.
