Nvidia's announcement of DLSS 5, the latest iteration of its artificial intelligence-powered graphics enhancement technology, has sparked a wave of criticism and comedic backlash from the gaming community. Unveiled at a conference on Monday, the technology promises to deliver "photoreal computer graphics previously only achieved in Hollywood visual effects," but many gamers are responding with skepticism and mockery.
The Promise and the Backlash
DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, is Nvidia's image enhancement technology that was first released in 2018. Initially used to upscale resolution, it has evolved to generate entirely new frames and is integrated into over 750 games. DLSS 5 is set to arrive this fall, with Nvidia showcasing sample clips earlier this week to demonstrate its capabilities.
However, the reaction has been far from universally positive. Gamers have taken to social media and online forums to express their discontent, with many describing the DLSS 5-enhanced graphics as "yassified"—a term for heavily edited images that attempt to look more attractive, often to a comical degree.
Examples That Sparked Outrage
A brief clip featuring the character Grace Ashcroft from Resident Evil Requiem highlighted the issue. With DLSS 5 turned on, her face appeared significantly altered: lips became plumper, under-eye bags lightened, and she seemed to be wearing makeup. Similar transformations were shown for characters in Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, and EA Sports FC, leading to accusations that the technology is undermining the artistic vision of game developers.
One commenter on YouTube encapsulated the sentiment, writing, "The obsession with fidelity over art direction is reaching terminal levels." Others noted that the clips had an uncanny valley feel, reminiscent of AI-generated imagery, which detracts from the immersive experience.
The Memeification of DLSS 5
The backlash has not been limited to criticism; it has also spawned a wave of memes. On X, one user posted a side-by-side comparison of the iconic Great Depression-era photograph "Migrant Mother" alongside a heavily edited version where the subject sports a bright smile and heavy makeup, captioned "Nvidia presents DLSS 5."
This has inspired a new meme template, with posts following a similar format: two images—one original and one edited—accompanied by text like "DLSS 5 off vs. DLSS 5 on." Examples include a memed photo of actor Kevin James juxtaposed with a version where his face looks entirely different, and animated or cartoon-style images placed next to unsettlingly realistic renditions.
Nvidia's Response
In response to the criticism, Nvidia has emphasized that developers retain artistic control. In a pinned comment on its YouTube video, the company stated, "Game developers have full, detailed artistic control over DLSS 5’s effects to ensure they maintain their game’s unique aesthetic."
CEO Jensen Huang addressed the issue during a press Q&A on Tuesday, asserting that critics are "completely wrong." He explained, "DLSS 5 fuses controllability of the geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI," allowing developers to fine-tune the AI to match their style without compromising artistic control.
Looking Ahead
Despite the controversy, DLSS 5 is slated for release this fall, with plans to integrate it into games such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Delta Force, Justice, Phantom Blade Zero, and Sea of Remnants. Nvidia continues to position the technology as a breakthrough, with Huang calling it "the GPT moment for graphics," blending handcrafted rendering with generative AI for enhanced visual realism.
As the gaming community grapples with the implications of AI-driven graphics, the debate over fidelity versus artistic integrity is likely to intensify, making DLSS 5 a focal point in the ongoing conversation about technology's role in creative expression.
