ITVX has launched a new channel, Space Live, offering a continuous real-time broadcast of Earth from the International Space Station (ISS). The channel, which went live on Wednesday, streams 4K footage from Sen's SpaceTV-1 camera system, providing three views: docking ports, a horizon view showing sunrises and storms, and a direct downward perspective as the ISS orbits. A tracker displays the ISS's live location, while an AI feed shares geographical and weather facts.
While NASA's YouTube channel has offered similar ISS footage for years, Space Live presents a polished alternative with higher-quality imagery and a soothing ambient soundtrack. The footage, captured by British space media company Sen, aims to offer a humbling view of our planet, though it may not fully replicate the 'overview effect' experienced by astronauts.
Viewers may find the stream awe-inspiring initially, watching continents pass in seconds, but boredom can set in as the loop continues indefinitely. The channel is positioned as background content, akin to a screensaver, rather than a show to be watched continuously. ITVX also offers other live channels, including Love Island and Christmas films, making Space Live just one option among many.
Despite its limitations, the channel serves as a gentle reminder of humanity's place in the universe. It may not be for everyone, but for those seeking a moment of perspective, Space Live provides a unique, calming view of Earth from above.
