The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has updated its travel guidance for Brits heading to Spain, focusing on child safety ahead of the busy summer holiday period. Millions of UK tourists are expected to visit Spain over the coming months, with many families among them.
Key Child Safety Warnings
The FCDO issued an update on Friday, June 26, 2026, emphasizing supervision around water. The guidance states: "Always supervise children [in swimming pools]. Keep small children within arms-reach in and around swimming pools, even if they can swim or there is a lifeguard present."
Regarding beaches, the advice warns: "Take care when swimming in the sea. Always supervise children and keep small children within arms-reach. Some beaches, especially around Spanish islands, may have strong undercurrents."
Drowning Risks and Flag System
Existing guidance highlights that drownings occur in both the sea and swimming pools in Spain each year. Holidaymakers are strongly advised against diving into unfamiliar waters and swimming at beaches where a river meets the sea.
The FCDO adds: "Many beaches have a flag system. Make sure you understand the system and follow any warnings (a red flag means you must not enter the water). Take extra care and get local knowledge if there are no lifeguards, flags or signs."
Additional Precautions
