UK Heat Alerts Amber as Temperatures Could Hit 33C

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has upgraded heat health warnings to amber across several regions, as the country braces for a bank holiday heatwave with temperatures potentially reaching 33 degrees Celsius.

Amber Warnings Issued

Amber heat health alerts have been issued for London, the South East, East, and Midlands, while yellow alerts cover the rest of England. These warnings come into effect from Friday and will remain in place until 5pm on 27 May. The alerts indicate a likely significant impact on health and social services, including a potential rise in deaths and increased demand on care provisions.

Temperature Forecast

Temperatures are forecast to reach up to 30C in London, but could exceed 33C in southern England on Sunday. This would surpass the current May record of 32.8C set in 1922. The high pressure system is expected to bring warm weather across the UK, with other regions seeing temperatures up to 28C throughout the bank holiday weekend.

The UKHSA warns that the heat could affect the ability of the workforce to deliver services, and there may be issues with managing medicines. Travel delays are also possible due to the high temperatures. The public is advised to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during peak hours, and checking on vulnerable individuals.

This period of warm weather is expected to continue over the bank holiday weekend, with the heat health alerts in place to ensure that health and social care services are prepared for the potential impacts.
