Tragic Rockfall Claims Life of Mountaineer on Mont Blanc
A devastating rockfall on Mont Blanc has resulted in the death of an Italian mountaineer, Carlo Chiodini, aged 43, shortly after he sent a heartfelt Father's Day message to his father. The incident occurred on March 19, during an elite alpine training course on the French side of the mountain, specifically in the Grand Flambeau area at an altitude of approximately 11,154 feet in Haute-Savoie, near the Italian border.
Heartbreaking Details of the Incident
In a poignant twist, Chiodini's father, Giancarlo Chiodini, revealed that his son had sent a WhatsApp message earlier that morning to wish him a happy Father's Day before embarking on the climb. In Italy, Father's Day is celebrated on March 19, unlike in the UK where it occurs later in the year on June 21. The rockfall struck around 1:30 PM, with Chiodini tragically losing his life at the scene as rocks cascaded down from above.
Injuries and Rescue Efforts
The training group included two other individuals: Federico Andreozzi, a trainee from Rome, who sustained multiple fractures and was airlifted to a hospital in Annecy, where he was placed in a medically induced coma prior to surgery. The instructor accompanying them, hailing from Trentino-Alto Adige, miraculously escaped without any injuries. All three were roped together on an exposed section of the Grand Flambeau when the deadly rockfall occurred, with nearby mountaineers witnessing the event and promptly alerting authorities.
Background and Investigation
Chiodini, originally from Maniago in the province of Pordenone, had a distinguished career as a naval engineer for 16 years, including overseeing the construction of a vessel in South Korea, before leaving the profession to pursue his passion for mountaineering and train as an alpine guide. He is survived by his seven-year-old son. The group had ascended via the Skyway cable car from Courmayeur and were participating in a professional training course organized by the Collegio Guide Alpine del Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Specialist mountain rescue gendarmes from Chamonix swiftly responded to the scene, and prosecutors in Haute-Savoie have since launched an investigation into the fatal incident. Daniele Guagliardo, president of the Alpine Guides of Friuli Venezia Giulia, confirmed that the instructor was ahead of the two trainees on the rope when the rocks fell, and checks verified that the instructor's qualifications were all in order.
