The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain covering parts of western Scotland, with forecasters warning of possible flooding and travel disruption from Sunday evening into Monday morning.
Warning Details and Affected Areas
The warning, announced on Sunday (July 5), comes into force at 5pm on Sunday and remains in place until 10am on Monday. It covers the Highlands and Eilean Siar, with Argyll and Bute listed as the area most likely to be affected in Strathclyde.
Forecasters say a prolonged spell of rain will move across the west of the country, bringing persistent downpours that could make journeys longer and more difficult while increasing the risk of surface water flooding.
Rainfall Totals and Impact
According to the Met Office, widespread rainfall totals of 20mm to 40mm are expected across the warning area. However, the wettest and most mountainous locations could see between 50mm and 75mm of rain, with some particularly exposed spots potentially receiving close to 100mm.
The forecaster states: "It will be a wet spell for the West Highlands, with the heaviest and most persistent rain expected from Sunday afternoon through until Monday morning. 20-40 mm is expected widely within the warning area through this period, with 50-75 mm in the most mountainous areas. There is a chance that the most exposed spots could see close to 100 mm. The rain is expected to become less heavy during Monday morning."
Safety Advice and Preparedness
The Met Office has issued advice to help people stay safe. Those living in areas vulnerable to flooding are encouraged to check whether their property is at risk and, if necessary, prepare a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.
Motorists are advised to check road conditions before setting off, while passengers using public transport should check bus and train timetables for any changes or delays and adjust their travel plans where possible.
Additionally, people in affected areas are encouraged to prepare for the possibility of a power cut, ensuring they have essential supplies such as torches, spare batteries, portable phone chargers and other items ready.
The Met Office reminds people that weather conditions can change rapidly and advises regularly checking the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation develops.
