Met Office Issues Snow Warning for Scotland and Northern Ireland This Week
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for snow in Scotland and Northern Ireland on Tuesday, marking a dramatic shift from last week's record-breaking warmth. Forecasters predict temperatures will plummet, with some rural areas potentially dropping to -5C overnight on Wednesday.
Sudden Temperature Drop After Record Heat
Last week saw temperatures soar above 20C, making it the hottest day of the year so far. However, the Met Office now warns of a sharp reversal, with weather fronts bringing rain, strong winds, and colder air across the UK. This change is expected to be particularly noticeable on Wednesday, which forecasters describe as a "shock to the system."
Daytime temperatures are forecast to range from 6C to 10C, but the wind chill will make it feel much colder, closer to low single figures for many regions.
Snow and Wintry Showers Expected
On Tuesday, heavy rain is predicted for northern England and Wales, while hail and thunder are likely in Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Met Office specifically highlights the possibility of snow in Northern Ireland and Scotland on Tuesday.
Steven Keates, Deputy Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, stated: "Wednesday could be quite a shock to the system. Wintry showers are likely, especially over higher ground in the north, and a widespread frost – with icy patches for some – is possible on Wednesday night."
Detailed Forecast for the Week
Tuesday: A wet and windy day for many, with snow possible in Northern Ireland and Scotland.
Wednesday: Chilly and windy conditions with sunny spells and showers, including wintry showers over hills. Overnight temperatures could drop to -5C in some rural areas, leading to ice in northern regions on Thursday morning.
Thursday: Most areas will remain dry with sunny spells, though cloud and rain may push into Northern Ireland and western parts later in the day.
Friday: Temperatures are expected to return closer to average, but another spell of rain is likely, affecting many areas. Further weather systems may impact the UK over the weekend, particularly in northern regions.
BBC Weather Confirms Snow Predictions
BBC Weather also forecasts snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. Their outlook indicates: "Tomorrow will see a band of rain pushing south-east, turning locally heavy across parts of England and Wales. Sunny spells and scattered rain, sleet and snow showers will develop behind this. Windy."
They add that Wednesday will be chilly and windy with wintry showers over hills, while Thursday will be drier with sunny spells for most, though wintry showers may linger towards eastern coasts.
This sudden shift underscores the unpredictable nature of British weather, moving from spring-like warmth to wintery conditions within days.
