Dramatic images captured the moment a thunderstorm struck Greater Manchester in the early hours of June 26, as the region continues to experience a heatwave. The Met Office had issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across the region from midnight, which remains in force until 10am today.

Residents Report Thunder and Lightning

Several residents reported being woken by thunder around 5am, with three huge bangs heard in parts of the region, including the city centre, north Manchester, and Salford. Images from across the area show lightning striking, with further rumbles heard at approximately 6.25am. Brief spells of rain also hit the region.

Heatwave Continues with Amber Warning

Greater Manchester is forecast to reach highs of 35°C today, with an amber warning for extreme heat in effect until midnight. Temperatures are expected to drop over the weekend, with highs of 28°C on Saturday and 21°C on Sunday, along with overnight lows in the teens.
