UK Snow Bomb Alert: 12-Hour Blizzard to Hit 11 English Counties on January 5
12-hour snow bomb to strike 11 English counties

The UK is bracing for a severe winter onslaught as a 'snow bomb' is predicted to unleash 12 hours of continuous snowfall across England in the New Year. Weather experts are urging residents to prepare for disruptive wintry conditions.

Timing and Impact of the Winter Storm

According to detailed modelling from the ECMWF HRES system, the main event is currently pinpointed for January 5. The forecasting service Met Desk indicates that snow could start falling from 6pm on January 4 and continue through the night, with flurries still showing on charts at 6am on January 5. The snowfall is expected to clear around midday, resulting in a full half-day of precipitation.

Which Areas Are at Risk?

Weather maps from WX Charts reveal that the wintry blast will sweep across a significant portion of the country. Eleven counties in England have been identified as being under threat from the snow bomb.

The primary areas set for significant snowfall include:

  • Durham
  • Northumberland
  • Greater Manchester
  • Lancashire
  • Cumbria
  • West Yorkshire
  • Cheshire

Additionally, Staffordshire, East Riding, North Yorkshire, and South Yorkshire may also experience lighter coverings. Residents in these regions are advised to monitor updates and plan for potential travel disruption.

Broader Weather Outlook for the New Year

The Met Office outlook for the period from January 6 onwards suggests a shift. High pressure is likely to build close to the UK, bringing drier and more settled weather, particularly in the south. However, temperatures are expected to remain close to or slightly below average for the time of year.

Netweather forecaster Terry Scholey provided further context, noting that the Christmas period will see cold days with frosts and possible freezing fog. He stated that as we move towards the New Year, winds may turn more northerly, introducing cloudier conditions that could limit frosts in some areas, though it should remain predominantly dry after this snowy interlude.

This impending cold snap serves as a sharp reminder that winter is firmly in place, prompting authorities to issue health warnings and advise the public to take necessary precautions against the freezing conditions.
