UK Blanketed in 10cm of Snow as Arctic Freeze Grips Nation
Arctic Blast Brings 10cm Snow Across UK, More Forecast

A dramatic Arctic freeze has transformed the United Kingdom into a winter wonderland, with vast swathes of the country waking up to a blanket of snow up to 10 centimetres deep on Friday, January 2, 2026.

Nation Gripped by Bitter Cold

Following New Year's celebrations, temperatures plunged well below zero overnight, ushering in a severe cold snap. The Met Office has issued widespread snow and ice warnings, which are expected to remain in force throughout the weekend and into the following week. Rebekah Hicks, the Met Office chief meteorologist, attributed the conditions to "arctic air and brisk northerly winds" gripping the nation.

Where the Snow Fell Hardest

Scotland bore the brunt of the initial snowfall. According to official estimates, Loch Glascarnoch in the Scottish Highlands saw over 8cm (3.14 inches) of accumulation, while Aboyne in Aberdeenshire recorded 9cm (3.54 inches). Stunning photographs emerged from Warwickshire in England, showing fields entirely covered in white, and from Llanrwst in Wales, where similar picturesque scenes unfolded.

The cold was so intense in parts of Scotland that lakes froze sufficiently for skating, and the heavy snow allowed for impromptu skiing. Major motorways in some regions were completely covered, causing significant travel disruption.

More Snow is on the Way

The Met Office warns that the situation is set to intensify. Forecasters predict further heavy snow showers, particularly across northern Scotland and over higher ground elsewhere. Accumulations could reach 10 to 20cm over low ground and a staggering 30 to 40cm over higher terrain, with risks of drifting snow and blizzards.

"Bitterly cold conditions will persist through the weekend and into next week," Rebekah Hicks stated. "Daytime temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing for some, and overnight lows could dip to minus double figures in places." The Met Office is urging the public to stay #WeatherAware, plan ahead for journeys, and expect icy roads and slippery surfaces.

While many inland areas will see sunny spells, the overarching message is one of caution as the UK settles into a prolonged period of severe winter weather at the start of the new year.
