Electrical Storm Protocol Activated at Estadio Azteca
England's World Cup round of 16 clash against Mexico is facing a potential kick-off delay after an electrical storm protocol was activated at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The match is scheduled to kick off at 6pm local time (1am BST Monday), but heavy rain and lightning have raised concerns.
AccuWeather's forecast for Coyoacan, where the stadium is located, warns: "Overcast with occasional rain and a thunderstorm later this afternoon; lightning from nearby storms may impact the soccer match." Express Sport reporters at the scene have confirmed heavy rain and lightning in the area, with pictures showing downpours pounding the stadium.
Stadium Shuts and Fans Prevented from Entering
Signs outside the Estadio Azteca displayed a warning reading "Protocolo de tormenta electrica activado" (electrical storm protocol activated). As a result, nobody is currently allowed onto the playing surface, and media staff have been instructed to stay inside the media centre until conditions improve. Supporters have also been prevented from entering the stadium, despite gates being scheduled to open three hours before kick-off (10pm BST).
Team arrivals at the ground were reportedly delayed due to the storms, although both sets of players have since arrived.
Local Laws on Lightning and Match Delays
According to local laws, if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius, action cannot take place for at least 30 minutes after the last detection. This rule applies both before and after kick-off. No official announcement of a delay has been made yet, but that could change depending on the circumstances.
The match is a crucial round of 16 tie, with both nations vying for a spot in the quarter-finals. Fans are advised to stay tuned for updates as the situation develops.
