The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a warning for anyone travelling to Turkey from today, July 7, due to the NATO Summit being held in Ankara. Holidaymakers should expect disruption including road closures, restrictions around key venues, and enhanced security measures at airports.
NATO Summit Causes Travel Disruption
The NATO Summit takes place in the Turkish capital today and tomorrow (July 7-8). An FCDO alert stated: "Due to the NATO Summit being held in Ankara on 7-8 July, there will be road closures and restrictions around key venues. Public transport routes will be affected."
Airport Restrictions and Enhanced Security
All commercial air travel to and from Ankara Esenboga Airport is prohibited from 0700-1500 Turkish time on 7 July, and from 1100-1800 Turkish time on 8 July. Airports will operate under enhanced security measures, likely resulting in longer processing times. Travellers are advised to arrive early, ensure documentation is ready, and expect stricter screening procedures.
Advice for British Holidaymakers
Turkey remains a popular holiday destination for millions of Brits. The FCDO advises travellers to research their destinations, get appropriate travel insurance covering their itinerary and planned activities, and ensure they have cover for emergencies.
