A hidden gem beach in Kent has been described as a 'slice of the Mediterranean' and is less than an hour from London. TikTok user 'wonder_lesea' shared a video of Mermaid Beach, located in Folkestone, praising its turquoise water and unique rock formations.
What Makes Mermaid Beach Special
Mermaid Beach sits beneath cliffs near Sunny Sands Beach and the Folkestone Harbour Arm. Its name comes from rocks shaped like a mermaid's tail. The secluded shingle beach offers a peaceful atmosphere with dramatic cliff backdrops. The TikTok caption read: 'Feels like Spain, but it's Kent.'
Access and Amenities
The beach is a 15-minute walk from Folkestone town centre. Trains from London to Folkestone Central take just 58 minutes. Visitors can also take a scenic route through Lower Leas Coastal Park, which features artificial grottoes built after World War I. Nearby cafes serve coffee, snacks, sandwiches, and ice cream. Barbecues are allowed, but dogs are restricted outside the main season.

Viewers of the TikTok video shared their enthusiasm. One commented: 'Thanks to you just booked a small holiday in Folkestone.' Another said: 'Mermaid beach is beautiful. I live an hour away and have been twice now. It's peaceful and beautiful and most importantly, clean.' A third added: 'I was there last year for the first time and definitely it's my favourite 'till now, water is clean and the area it's very nice.' However, one visitor noted a quirk: 'All fun 'till you can't use your phone for five minutes because it thinks you're in France.'
