Oban Seafood Hut, a tiny seafood hut on Oban's pier, has been named one of the best seafood shacks in Scotland by TripAdvisor. Known as The Green Hut, it offers incredibly fresh seafood at reasonable prices, with a no-frills atmosphere and beautiful coastal views.
Fresh Seafood at Affordable Prices
Operated daily from 10am to 5pm (6pm on weekends), the hut is a cash-only business. Despite its small size, the kitchen runs efficiently with at least five staff members. Customers should come prepared with cash and their order ready. No side dishes are served—just simple seafood that tastes freshly caught.
On arrival after a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Glasgow, many of the hut's acclaimed dishes were sold out, including the famous prawn sandwich and scallops in garlic butter. However, plenty remained: langoustines, sweet-chilli calamari, mussels, a smoked salmon sandwich, and six oysters.
Generous Portions and Great Value
A paper ticket is given, and customers find seats at communal wooden tables or a standing area. The grand platter, costing £48, includes a full lobster, mussels, calamari, and hot smoked salmon. The oysters, served with lemon wedges and tabasco, cost just £1.70 each—unusually cheap for such large oysters. The mussels in garlic white wine broth, at £5.95, were a favorite, with a portion large enough for two. The hot smoked salmon sandwich (£5.50) was dunked in the broth, pairing well with the smoky fish.
Langoustines (£15) came in butter with bread and chilli sauce, requiring messy eating as no tools are provided. The calamari was served simply without batter, covered in sauce. After the meal, customers can wash hands at the hut's own sink.
Unbeatable Value for Fresh Seafood
The total cost for the meal was £41, which the reviewer found incredible, noting that most restaurants would charge double for smaller portions. The hut proves that fresh seafood can be accessible and affordable, offering a meal with a view, friendly staff, and a boost in Scottish pride.
