Simon Calder Warns of Heatwave Travel Chaos

Travel journalist Simon Calder has warned GB News viewers of significant travel disruptions across the UK and beyond, caused by the ongoing heatwave. On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Calder reported that train services have been severely impacted, with more than two dozen cancellations on the line between London St. Pancras International and Sheffield via Derby and Nottingham on Monday. He added that the same line is experiencing further disruptions this morning due to emergency services attending an incident near Chesterfield and Sheffield.

Train Operators Struggle with Heat

Calder explained that the Great Western Railway (GWR) line connecting London Paddington to the west of England and south Wales is also facing problems. GWR has announced it will not switch points on the main line between London and Reading, as the mechanism is more prone to failure in hot weather. This will cause slower journeys for passengers travelling from Newbury or Didcot Parkway. Calder stated, "You can expect more cancellations on that line. They say it is due to the heatwave."

International Disruption: Sicily Airport Closed

Beyond the UK, Calder highlighted that Catania Airport in Sicily has been closed for 36 hours due to volcanic ash from Mount Etna. This has led to flight diversions and cancellations, affecting travellers from Manchester and London. Calder noted, "In Sicily, that airport has been closed for the last 36 hours because of volcanic ash from Mount Etna. We've had a whole lot of diversions, a couple of flights going in from Manchester and from London this morning, which hopefully will be able to touch down." He also mentioned that many holidaymakers in Sicily are waiting to return home.

Thunderstorm Risk Adds to Concerns

Calder warned that heatwaves often bring a high risk of thunderstorms, which could further disrupt travel. He urged travellers to stay updated and check for cancellations before heading to stations or airports.
