Met Office Hay Fever Alert as 22C Mini Heatwave Approaches UK
Hay fever sufferers across the United Kingdom are being urged to take protective measures this week as pollen levels, particularly ash pollen, are set to rise significantly. The Met Office has issued a warning that high pollen counts will affect several regions, coinciding with a forecasted mini heatwave that could see temperatures reach 22C in some areas.
High Pollen Levels Forecast for Multiple Regions
The Met Office has specifically identified Wednesday as a day of concern, with high pollen levels expected across the East Midlands, East of England, Southeast of England, Southwest of England, and the West Midlands. In Wales, the threat is described as medium for the same day. This marks a stark contrast to recent days when most regions experienced low pollen counts, aided by cooler temperatures that dropped to just 2.5C near Dover, Kent, on Friday.
Ash pollen is the primary concern this week, especially across southern counties, but the situation is expected to worsen with the imminent start of birch pollen season, which typically runs from March to June and peaks between April and May. Birch pollen can trigger asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis, causing irritated eyes, nose, and sinuses, with symptoms often appearing when the pollen count exceeds 50 grains per cubic metre of air.
Millions of Sufferers at Risk
An estimated 13 million people in the UK suffer from hay fever, and many have reported that the season appears to have started earlier this year, similar to last year. With the impending rise in temperatures, the combination of heat and pollen could lead to severe symptoms for those affected.
The Met Office emphasizes that weather conditions play a crucial role in pollen release and spread, with humid and windy days making pollen more prevalent. As the mercury climbs towards 22C in the coming weeks, these conditions are likely to intensify the hay fever threat.
Protective Measures Recommended
To help minimise exposure and ease symptoms, the Met Office recommends several practical steps for hay fever sufferers:
- Wear wraparound sunglasses to protect eyes from pollen
- Use a mask or wide-brimmed hat to prevent pollen from entering the nose and eyes
- Shower and change clothes after spending time outdoors
- Monitor local pollen forecasts and plan activities accordingly
Long-Range Weather Forecast
According to the Met Office's long-range forecast, a northwest to southeast split is expected across the UK in the coming period. The northwest is likely to experience more unsettled weather with low pressure systems bringing showers or longer spells of rain, along with possible strong winds along coasts.
In contrast, the southeast will be under greater influence from high pressure, resulting in more settled and drier conditions. Temperatures overall are forecast to be near or slightly above normal, contributing to the conditions that facilitate pollen spread.
With pollen levels set to rise dramatically this week, hay fever sufferers are advised to stay informed about local conditions and take appropriate precautions to manage their symptoms during this challenging period.
