Met Office Issues Hay Fever Alert for Millions Across England and Wales
The Met Office has issued a significant hay fever alert as pollen levels surge across southern parts of England and Wales, just one week after the spring equinox. This development is set to impact the estimated 10 million people in England who suffer from hay fever, with symptoms expected to intensify over the coming days.
Rising Pollen Counts Trigger Health Warnings
Tree pollen levels are forecast to be moderate to high in the coming days, particularly affecting southern regions. According to the Met Office, tree pollen impacts approximately a quarter of hay fever sufferers, leading to increased symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion. The pollen count, which measures grains per cubic metre of air, typically triggers symptoms when it exceeds 50.
Regional Forecast Details:
- Sunday: Moderate pollen levels across the southwest and east of England.
- Monday: High ash pollen counts in London, the southeast, and southwest, with moderate levels in Wales, the Midlands, and eastern England.
- Tuesday: Moderate pollen in Grampian, Scotland, while other parts of Scotland and northern England see low counts.
- Wednesday: High levels persist in the Midlands, east, southeast, and southwest of England, with moderate levels in Wales.
Birch Pollen Season Approaches with Additional Risks
The Met Office has also warned that the birch pollen season is imminent, typically occurring between March and June and peaking in April and May. Birch pollen can cause severe reactions, including asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis, which involves irritation of the eyes, nose, and sinuses. This adds to the health concerns for vulnerable individuals during this period.
Weather Conditions Influence Pollen Dispersion
Weather plays a crucial role in pollen release and spread. The Met Office notes that humid and windy days are particularly conducive to higher pollen prevalence. In the coming week, temperatures are expected to stabilise above 10°C for most of the UK, with bright spells and some cloud cover. On Tuesday, temperatures may reach the mid-teens, creating conditions that could exacerbate pollen dispersal.
Five-Day Weather Outlook from the Met Office
This Evening and Tonight: Daytime showers will ease, with most areas becoming dry and clear. However, a band of cloud and rain will move into Scotland and Northern Ireland later, leading to a cold night with widespread slight frost.
Sunday: A chilly and bright start in the southeast, but cloud and rain from the northwest will spread across the country. Brighter but showery conditions will follow, remaining blustery throughout the day.
Monday to Wednesday: Conditions will remain cool but drier on Monday. Tuesday will bring warmer weather with bright spells, though patchy rain is expected in the west. By Wednesday, further rain is forecast for the northwest, while other areas may experience some brightness.
This alert underscores the importance for hay fever sufferers to take precautions, such as monitoring local pollen forecasts and using appropriate medications, as the spring season progresses.
