Nationwide Building Society Issues 'Concerned' Alert Over Rising Gambling Expenditure
Nationwide Building Society has released new figures indicating a significant increase in customer gambling activity, prompting a formal alert from the institution. The data, which covers January 2026, shows a 9% rise in gambling spending compared to the same month last year, raising concerns about potential financial harm among members.
Key Statistics and Trends in Gambling Transactions
According to the latest report, not only has spending surged, but the number of gambling transactions has also increased by 7%. The most striking detail reveals that top spenders are now averaging £745 per month on gambling activities. This upward trend coincides with a busy sporting calendar for 2026, which includes several high-profile events expected to drive betting participation.
A survey conducted with 2,000 gamblers further underscores this issue, with two-thirds of respondents anticipating they will bet more in 2026 due to these major sporting occasions. However, the survey also uncovered a concerning gap in awareness: approximately one-fifth of gamblers are unaware that banks, including Nationwide, offer gambling blocks on accounts to help manage spending.
Official Response and Support Measures
Kathryn Townsend, head of customer vulnerability at Nationwide, expressed the society's apprehension in a statement. "With a year of major sporting events ahead, we're concerned that more people could find themselves gambling more than they can afford," she said. To address this, Nationwide has implemented a 72-hour cooling-off period for gambling blocks, allowing customers to temporarily restrict access to betting sites and regain control over their finances.
The building society emphasises that support is available without judgment for those experiencing gambling-related harm. This initiative is part of a broader effort to raise awareness about problem gambling and promote responsible financial behaviour among its members.
Broader Implications and Charity Warnings
GamCare, a leading charity focused on gambling harm, has echoed Nationwide's concerns, warning that such issues are often hidden but can lead to severe personal and financial problems. The charity highlights the importance of early intervention and education to mitigate risks associated with excessive gambling.
As the data suggests a potential spike in gambling activity linked to upcoming sports events, financial institutions and support organisations are urging the public to utilise available tools, such as account blocks, to prevent overspending. Nationwide's proactive stance aims to safeguard customer well-being while fostering a culture of transparency and assistance in managing gambling habits.
