Aldi Named UK's Cheapest Supermarket, £60 Cheaper Than Sainsbury's

Aldi has been named the UK's cheapest supermarket for June 2026, with a basket of 95 items costing £163.34, according to consumer group Which?. That is £60 less than Sainsbury's standard price of £203.83 and over £66 cheaper than Waitrose at £229.88.

How the Supermarkets Compare

Lidl came in second at £164.92, just £1.58 more than Aldi. With Lidl Plus app discounts, the total dropped to £164.79, a mere £1.45 behind the winner. Asda held fourth place at £190.39, while Sainsbury's with Nectar card deals totalled £193.30, undercutting Tesco's Clubcard price of £194.67.

Morrisons with its More loyalty scheme cost £198.41, and without it £198.53. Tesco without Clubcard was £200.63, and Sainsbury's without Nectar was £203.83. Ocado cost £214.72, and Waitrose was the most expensive at £229.88—40.73% more than Aldi.

Loyalty Card Impact

The research highlighted a growing gap between loyalty and non-loyalty prices. Sainsbury's offered 27 Nectar discounts in June, reducing its basket by over £10. Tesco's Clubcard saved shoppers about £6. Which? Retail Editor Reena Sewraz said: "The discounters remain the cheapest supermarkets for everyday essentials, while at the larger supermarkets the massive gap between member and non-member prices shows that retailers are increasingly locking their best value away behind a digital wall."

What's in the Basket?

The 95-item basket included a mix of own-brand and branded products, such as Birds Eye peas, Cathedral City cheddar, and Kellogg's corn flakes. Sewraz added: "When walking into one supermarket over another – or forgetting your loyalty card – can mean paying over 40% more for basically the same everyday essentials, switching where you shop is still the fastest way to slash your weekly grocery bill."
