Halifax customers will eventually need to move from the Halifax app to the Lloyds app as part of the brand's rebranding to Lloyds, which was announced this week. The Halifax name will disappear after 173 years, with branches rebranding to Lloyds throughout 2027.
What Changes for Customers
For the most part, customers do not need to take any immediate action. Account numbers and sort codes will remain the same. However, customers will eventually be asked to switch to the Lloyds app. Some existing Halifax customers have received a message on their banking app stating: "Halifax has been part of the same family as Lloyds for many years, and soon, the Halifax brand will change to Lloyds. Over time, the brand of your Halifax accounts will change to Lloyds. You don't need to do anything yet, and your account details will stay the same."
The message continues: "Soon, when you log in, we'll be asking you to start using the Lloyds app. It's very similar to this one, and just as easy to use. Once you're invited, you can move across in a few quick steps. We'll never ask you to share personal details or move money by phone, email or text. Links or QR codes will be shared for information only. We won't ask you to log in or verify yourself using them. We're here to answer any questions you may have."
Background and Commitments
Halifax and Bank of Scotland have been part of Lloyds Banking Group since 2009. Lloyds insisted it was "committed to its role in the town of Halifax, and the wider Yorkshire and Humber region." It noted a £116 million investment in its Trinity Road office in Halifax town centre and that the 3,000 colleagues based there "will continue to play a key role in the Group’s future."
Lloyds Banking Group previously announced 79 new branch closures on top of 95 already planned over the coming year, across the three brands. This will leave the group with 531 branches in total across the UK, of which about 190 will be former Halifax outlets.
CEO Statement
Jas Singh, CEO of Consumer Relationships at Lloyds Banking Group, said: “As Halifax changes to Lloyds, our Halifax customers will keep everything they know and love today - the same fantastic app design, the same friendly faces in our branches – even the same sort code and account number. But as Lloyds customers, they’ll get the best innovation and experiences we offer.”
“Our Lloyds customers are already benefiting from a significant investment into propositions like Club Lloyds, Lloyds Premier, Lloyds Ultra and Lloyds Rewards – and now we’re really excited that Halifax customers can bank on Lloyds for more.”
