Man United handed £80m advantage in Rafael Leao chase after Milan agreement
Man United edge closer to Leao after Milan agree £51-60m fee

AC Milan have reportedly reached an agreement with Rafael Leao's representatives that the forward can leave the club this summer for a fee between £51 million and £60 million. This development comes after weeks of speculation linking the Portugal international with a move to Manchester United.

Leao's desire for a new challenge

In May, Leao publicly expressed his wish to leave Milan after seven years at the San Siro. The 27-year-old has scored 80 goals and added 65 assists in 291 appearances for the Rossoneri. Speaking to Sport TV, Leao said: "I think I gave Milan everything I could give. It is a club that helped me grow a lot and supported me through difficult moments. I am happy to have left my mark on the club's history. Everyone has their dreams, their challenges, the things they want, the goals they want to achieve. And I also want to take on a new challenge in a new league."

Manchester United's interest

United are among the leading suitors for Leao, with manager Michael Carrick keen to strengthen his forward line ahead of a return to the Champions League. According to Sky Sport Italia, Milan met with Leao's representatives and agreed that he can leave for £51-60m. This would represent a significant profit on the £42.4m Milan paid Lille to sign him in 2019.

While Milan prefer a straight permanent deal, they are open to a loan with an obligation to buy next summer. Turkish clubs Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have made offers, but Leao has his heart set on a move to the Premier League or La Liga, with United seen as the most realistic destination.

Boost from Tottenham's priorities

Tottenham have also expressed interest in Leao, but manager Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly prioritizing an ambitious £80m swoop for Bournemouth's Eli Junior Kroupi. This could hand United an advantage in their pursuit of Leao, as Spurs may not compete directly for his signature.

Leao's recent form and Portugal's World Cup

Leao endured a frustrating 2025/26 season at Milan, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in 31 appearances across all competitions. Milan finished fifth in Serie A and missed out on Champions League football, leading to the appointment of former Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim as head coach in mid-June.

Leao's future is expected to be resolved after Portugal's World Cup campaign ends. Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in the Round of 32 and face Spain next on Monday.
