Dishwasher Danger: Why You Should Never Wash Kitchen Knives in the Machine
Experts have issued a stark warning to households across the country: never put your kitchen knives in the dishwasher. This common kitchen mistake, often made during routine tidying, can slowly ruin your cutlery, leading to unnecessary and expensive replacements. The guidance comes from consumer champion Which? and premium manufacturer Villeroy & Boch, who both highlight the severe damage dishwashers inflict on sharp blades.
The Hidden Dangers of Dishwasher Cycles
Instead of letting knives clatter about with other utensils in the machine, you should always wash them manually using warm, soapy water. Furthermore, you must wipe them dry immediately with a soft cloth to prevent rust formation. In a recent TikTok clip, Which? advised: "Step away from the dishwasher. It might be convenient, but it is a disaster zone for sharp blades."
The organisation explains that the high heat inside a dishwasher can warp knife handles, while the powerful water pressure knocks the blade against other cutlery. This impact causes tiny chips that dull the edge instantly, compromising the knife's performance and longevity.
Manufacturer Backs the Warning
Backing this up, Villeroy & Boch states emphatically: "As practical as a dishwasher is, it can be harmful to kitchen knives. Over time, repeated dishwasher use can cause knives to become blunt." In the worst-case scenario, they may even rust and become completely unusable, as both the handles and blades are adversely affected.
The company elaborates: "It's extremely frustrating when the beautiful wooden handle of your Villeroy & Boch steak knife suddenly cracks and splinters. But what causes this? Harsh detergents and salts, combined with high temperatures in the dishwasher, end up making the edge porous and blunt, and therefore more susceptible to rust."
Additionally, the moisture causes wooden handles to swell and become brittle over time. Consequently, using water and a mild washing-up liquid by hand is a far better choice for washing certain knives, preserving their sharpness and structural integrity.
Mixed Reactions from the Public
While some online commenters strongly support this expert guidance, others insist they have been placing their knives in the dishwasher for decades without encountering any problems. One Reddit user commented: "My knives have been in the dishwasher for 30 years. No issues, but they are cheaper."
Another added a note of caution: "When it takes one minute to clean, rinse, and dry a knife by hand, why would you take the risk of damaging it in a dishwasher? Maybe if it's completely waterproof, like a stainless steel blade with a synthetic handle, and put in the dishwasher without anything near it that might bang against it, but still, it takes one minute to do the same by hand."
A third user offered a pragmatic approach: "I put my bread knife and paring knives, which are cheap ones, in the dishwasher all the time. Proper knives, and my peeler, never go in. It just seems like all risk for limited gains to put the nice stuff in there. I also don't want to lock up my main knives for a few hours."
Ultimately, the consensus among experts is clear: to maintain the quality and longevity of your kitchen knives, avoid the dishwasher entirely. Hand washing and immediate drying remain the safest methods, protecting your investment and ensuring your blades stay sharp and rust-free for years to come.
