The poll, conducted by East Pizzas ahead of National Pizza Day, definitively settles the debate by revealing that pepperoni is the nation's favourite topping, chosen by 41% of Brits. Mozzarella follows closely at 36%, with chicken ranking third at 30%. Interestingly, pineapple, a contentious choice, just missed the top ten but received approval from over half of respondents, indicating it does have a place on pizza for many.

Britain's evolving culinary preferences are highlighted by a surge in 'posh pizzas.' Roly Simpson, founder of East Pizzas, commented, 'Pepperoni remains Britain's favourite, but 64% of us now opt for posh pizzas with sourdough bases, artisan toppings, and wood-fired crusts. The top ten could change significantly in coming years.' He noted a sharp increase in demand for premium toppings like hot honey, burrata, and nduja, as consumers move away from floppy, overpriced takeaways.

The research also indicates a shift towards home-cooked options, with three-quarters of Brits ditching mass-brand takeaways due to cost, lack of freshness, or health concerns. About 32% are embracing the role of 'pizzaiolos,' making pizzas from scratch or using pre-made dough, reflecting a growing DIY trend. Simpson added, '65% of people actively choose food without ultra-processed ingredients, influencing how we enjoy pizza.'
