Tesco Shopper Shocked as Leg of Lamb Substituted with Whole Joint
Tesco Shopper Shocked by Lamb Substitute

A woman was left utterly perplexed when she unpacked her Tesco grocery delivery, only to discover that the half leg of lamb she had ordered had been replaced with an entirely different product. The substitution, while generous in value, left her both amused and concerned about how to consume such a large joint before it spoiled.

Online Grocery Ordering: Convenience with Risks

Most supermarkets now offer online grocery ordering for home delivery, a service that provides convenience and accessibility, particularly for those without a car or who wish to avoid crowded stores. However, this system sometimes leads to unexpected substitutions when items are out of stock. Customers can opt to allow the supermarket to choose a replacement, typically a similar product from a different brand or variant. While often straightforward, errors can occur.

A Surprising Substitute

Shopper Irene was astonished when her Tesco order arrived. She had ordered a half leg of lamb priced at £8.50 per kilo, but instead received a full leg of lamb that would normally cost £45, or £16.50 per kilo. Tesco had price-matched it to her original order, meaning she paid only a fraction of the actual value for the substantial joint.

In a viral post on X, Irene wrote: "Ordered half a leg of lamb off Tesco for £8.50 and, because they didn’t have it, they’ve sent me a £45 whole leg of lamb for £8.50 instead… which is amazing, except I’m not entertaining Henry VIII."

Concerns Over Consumption

While impressed by the bargain, Irene expressed worry that she and her family might not finish the meat before it went bad. The full leg of lamb had a shelf life of three days, compared to the five days for the half leg she originally ordered. She responded to comments by saying the lamb was already in the oven and they would do their best to eat it.

Social Media Reactions

Many social media users were impressed by Tesco's substitution. Suggestions included turning leftovers into stew, curry, or freezing the meat. One commenter joked: "You poor b******... Why would you even complain at that? Cut it in half and freeze it." Irene clarified she was not complaining, just shocked. Another user shared a worse substitution story: "Could always be worse...they could've done what they did to me and substituted my chicken for vegan chicken."

Tesco has been approached for comment regarding the incident.
