An American living in the UK has shared her thoughts on the British heatwave, suggesting that Brits might be onto something when they claim the sun “hits differently” in the UK. Stacey, who moved from the US to England, went viral after recounting her first experience of a British heatwave, admitting she was completely unprepared for how unbearable the heat inside British homes can become.
One Thing America Gets Right
According to Stacey, there is one thing America absolutely gets right that Britain desperately needs more of: air conditioning. In a brutally honest TikTok rant, she joked that while America may “do a lot of things wrong”, the widespread availability of air conditioning is “one of the great things” the country has figured out. She said: “I don’t know if anybody told you, but it is so hot.”
The content creator explained that despite living in Louisiana, a state famous for its humid and intense heat, she never felt as uncomfortable indoors as she currently does in England. According to Stacey, the biggest issue is not necessarily the outdoor temperatures themselves, but the lack of airflow and cooling systems inside homes and flats.
Fans Are Not Cutting It
“The fans are not cutting it,” she admitted. Laughing about her experience, Stacey described her flat as feeling like “a hot fart” because of the trapped heat and lack of ventilation. She also poked fun at the British phrase “aircon”, insisting Americans simply call it “AC” or “air conditioning”. The video quickly struck a chord online, with many Brits admitting they completely understood her frustration.
While air conditioning is common across large parts of the US due to hotter climates, most UK homes were built to retain heat during colder months rather than stay cool during summer. As a result, temperatures inside homes can often become stifling during heatwaves, especially overnight.
Window Units vs. British Heat
Stacey explained that in America she used a small window air-conditioning unit whenever temperatures became unbearable. She added: “I wasn’t suffering inside like I am here.” Despite jokingly criticising Britain’s lack of cooling systems, Stacey made it clear she knows Brits are struggling too. “I know you guys are hot, okay?” she said.
Her comments have reignited the long-running debate about whether the UK heat feels worse than temperatures abroad, with many people insisting British homes simply are not designed for warmer weather. And while some viewers told her to “stop complaining”, others admitted they were currently melting indoors themselves and dreaming of proper air conditioning. One thing most people seemed to agree on? British heatwaves feel a lot less fun once bedtime arrives.
