A 58-year-old man from Santa Rosa, California, lost his life after his vehicle veered off Highway 1 and plummeted nearly 500 feet down a steep cliff onto a beach. The incident occurred on Monday just before 1 p.m. about a mile south of Scott Creek Bridge near Davenport, according to KSBW 8.
Details of the Crash
The driver was operating a black 2017 Honda Pilot when the car left the west roadway edge, struck a call box, tumbled through vegetation, and plunged off the cliff. Officials confirmed he was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Despite the swift response of two California State Parks lifeguards who swam from Greyhound State Beach to the pocket beach where the car landed, the man could not be saved.
Rescue Efforts
The lifeguards, both marine safety officers, had to run and swim nearly a mile to reach the driver, who had been ejected from the car and was found in the water. Santa Cruz Marine Safety Captain David Bodine stated, "The two lifeguards... did pull the victim out of the water and perform CPR until the victim was long-lined, or hoisted, off the beach and up on the cliff, where resuscitation efforts were continued." Despite these efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not released the driver's identity or disclosed the cause of the crash. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death. The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
Previous Incidents
This tragedy follows a similar fatal crash in February, when another driver died after their car went off a cliff on Highway 1 at Big Sur. That section of the highway, which includes Hurricane Point, had only recently reopened to the public in 2023 after being closed due to landslides.
