The race for European qualification from the Premier League is reaching its climax, with eight spots already guaranteed and the potential for more. The complex rules mean that the final day of the season could bring unexpected twists for several clubs.
How Many European Places Are Available?
Currently, eight English clubs will play continental football next season. This includes four Champions League places from league position, a fifth guaranteed via the European Performance Spot (EPS) due to English success in Europe, two Europa League spots (one from league position, one for the FA Cup winners), and one Conference League spot (for the Carabao Cup winners).
Current Standings and Projected Qualifiers
If the season ended now, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool would take the Champions League spots. Brighton would claim the Europa League place for sixth, and Bournemouth would enter the Conference League as seventh. However, if Manchester City win the FA Cup, the Europa League spot passes down, meaning sixth and seventh go to the Europa League and eighth to the Conference League—currently Chelsea.
But the situation is fluid. Aston Villa could increase the total to 10 places if they win the Europa League and finish outside the top four, granting an extra Champions League spot. Similarly, if Nottingham Forest win the Europa League or Crystal Palace win the Conference League, additional places could be added.
Potential Weird Outcomes
The congested mid-table, with just five points separating sixth and 12th, opens the door for surprise teams like Fulham or Sunderland to snatch a European spot. One bizarre scenario could see Brentford reach the Champions League by losing on the final day. If Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, the extra Champions League place could drop to sixth place—potentially Brentford if they finish sixth. Their final-day trip to Liverpool, who currently sit fifth, could see them hoping for a Liverpool win to keep Villa fifth, or a Brentford win to secure their own spot.
With so many permutations, the final day promises drama for fans and analysts alike.
