Fulham strengthened their bid for European football as Ryan Sessegnon’s first-half strike secured a 1-0 victory over a lacklustre Aston Villa at Craven Cottage.
Match Overview
The win was only Fulham’s second in their last six Premier League outings, highlighting the inconsistency that threatens their top-seven ambitions. However, on a sunny afternoon backed by a passionate home crowd, Marco Silva’s side demonstrated the quality they possess.
The decisive moment arrived just before half-time. Emiliano Martinez initially denied Sasa Lukic’s header with a sharp save, but Villa’s defence failed to react to the lurking Sessegnon, who fired the rebound through Ezri Konsa’s legs on the goal line.
Villa’s Struggles Continue
Aston Villa were architects of their own downfall and delivered a poor performance. Since their eight-match winning streak ended in late December, they have not recorded consecutive league victories, and this pattern persisted in west London. Despite this, they retain a comfortable cushion in the race for Champions League qualification.
Villa managed only two first-half shots on target, through Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, and created little after the break. Unai Emery’s late substitutions suggested one eye was on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest. They will need a significant improvement to keep their European dream alive.
First-Half Action
The opening period was lacklustre. Raul Jimenez headed straight at Martinez when unmarked from close range, while Emiliano Buendia fired wide after a rapid Villa counter-attack. Lukic then squandered a chance, scuffing a weak effort into the goalkeeper’s arms from the edge of the box.
Rogers, watched by England manager Thomas Tuchel, came closest to breaking the deadlock, dancing through Fulham’s defence and driving a low shot just wide. Watkins, also aiming to impress Tuchel ahead of the World Cup, held off Joachim Andersen and whistled a strike past the post.
Fulham took the lead two minutes before half-time. Timothy Castagne crossed from the right, Martinez parried Lukic’s header, and Sessegnon reacted fastest to smash the loose ball into an empty net.
Second-Half Developments
Villa needed a response but had to wait until the hour mark for their next opening, when Watkins blasted high and wide from a promising position. Castagne then headed the ball into Villa’s net from a corner, but the goal was disallowed because Sander Berge had impeded Martinez.
Emery made four changes in the final 15 minutes, substituting Youri Tielemans and John McGinn among others, hinting that attention had already turned to Thursday’s match at the City Ground. Watkins was also withdrawn shortly after. The changes failed to ignite Villa, who limped to the final whistle without troubling Bernd Leno again.
