Manchester United have initiated transfer discussions with Atalanta regarding a potential move for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, as the club's summer recruitment drive accelerates. The Red Devils are prioritising a midfield overhaul after securing a return to the Champions League, and Ederson has emerged as a primary target.
Transfer Talks Underway
According to reports, United have already opened negotiations with the Serie A side, who had anticipated selling the 26-year-old to Atletico Madrid. However, the La Liga club has since agreed a deal to sign Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton Wanderers, paving the way for Manchester United and other suitors to pursue Ederson.
While no formal agreement between the clubs has been reached, progress is being made, and talks are expected to continue in the coming days. United are likely to sign at least two new midfielders this summer, with Ederson being one of several names on their shortlist.
Other Midfield Targets
Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Both players possess Premier League experience and are expected to leave their current clubs—Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, respectively—this summer. Manchester City are also keen on Anderson and are considered frontrunners for his signature.
Tonali was the subject of a late-winter window approach from Arsenal, but that was swiftly dismissed by his representatives. Newcastle are bracing for interest in several players after a disappointing campaign, and United could offer Tonali the chance to remain in the Premier League while competing in the Champions League.
Carrick's First Signing
If Ederson completes the move to Old Trafford, he will become Michael Carrick's first signing as permanent head coach. Carrick, 44, was confirmed in the role on Friday morning after guiding United to a third-place finish, securing 11 wins in 16 matches. He has signed a contract until 2028, with an option for a further year.
United's midfield rebuild is expected to be a key focus of the summer transfer window, with the club aiming to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
