Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to score a crucial equaliser, denying Everton a vital victory in their push for European qualification. The match ended 2-2 at Selhurst Park, leaving Everton's hopes of a top-eight finish severely damaged.
First Half Action
Everton took an early lead after just six minutes. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's corner was inadvertently helped on by a Palace defender, allowing James Tarkowski to volley home from close range. The visitors then survived a frantic 30-second spell where Jordan Pickford saved brilliantly from Maxence Lacroix, before Dean Henderson denied Dewsbury-Hall at the other end.
Crystal Palace grew into the game and equalised 10 minutes before half-time. Michael Keane's poor clearance was seized upon by Ismaila Sarr, who thumped the ball past Pickford. Iliman Ndiaye had a golden chance to restore Everton's lead in stoppage time, but his header lacked power and was cleared off the line by Sarr.
Second Half Drama
Everton regained the lead less than 90 seconds into the second half. Beto raced onto Tarkowski's ball over the top, showing remarkable strength to hold off Lacroix before finishing calmly. Henderson then made an athletic save to deny James Garner's free-kick, while Pickford was forced to bat away Daichi Kamada's searching pass.
Palace continued to press, and 14 minutes from time, Mateta was in the right place to sweep Tyrick Mitchell's cutback into the roof of the net from eight yards. Adam Wharton struck a post in stoppage time with a fierce drive from outside the box, before Mateta missed a glorious chance when clean through. A goal then would have been harsh on Everton.
European Implications
The draw leaves Everton on 49 points, while victory would have moved them level with Brentford in eighth and within two points of the last guaranteed European berth. Palace, meanwhile, maintain their momentum ahead of the Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27.
