Gary Neville believes Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick knows the Reds need significant squad improvements across multiple transfer windows to return to competing for silverware and the Premier League title. Speaking after United's 2-1 victory against Brentford, Neville told Sky Sports that Carrick is aware of the work required to elevate the squad.
Neville's Assessment of United's Squad
Neville, a former United defender, insisted Carrick will understand the improvements needed within the camp. He noted that Casemiro is unlikely to stay beyond this season, a new midfield must be built, and the back line remains problematic. "I see things in there which I would want better," Neville said. "There is some good bits, there is some lively play. But there is still work to do."
Carrick's Impressive Record
Carrick, 44, has performed admirably since taking over from Ruben Amorim in mid-January. The former Middlesbrough manager has won nine and drawn two of his 13 fixtures in charge, collecting 29 points from a possible 39. This run has lifted United to third in the Premier League table, 11 points above sixth-place Brighton with four games remaining. They need just one more victory to secure a return to next season's Champions League.
Long-Term Planning
Neville highlighted Carrick's influence on squad decisions for next season, even if his interim role may not become permanent. "He thinks about the long-term future of the club, even if he is not here at the end of the season," Neville said. "He is more than likely to be [United manager next season], but if he is not, I think he'll think this needs a couple more transfer windows to get this squad to where I want it to."
Managerial Contenders
Carrick stands as the leading contender to be appointed United's next permanent head coach ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. Other candidates include Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola, Germany's Julian Nagelsmann, and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner. However, United's impressive form under Carrick has firmly established him as the prime candidate as the club gears up for a Champions League return for the first time since 2023.
