Liverpool's injury crisis has deepened ahead of Sunday's crucial Premier League encounter with Manchester United at Old Trafford, as manager Arne Slot confirmed that both Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker will miss the match.
Salah's Minor Injury Keeps Him Out
Mohamed Salah was forced off during Liverpool's recent victory over Crystal Palace, sparking fears that his season—and potentially his Anfield career—might be over. However, the Premier League champions have confirmed that the 33-year-old's issue is only minor, and he is expected to return for the final games of the campaign. Liverpool have four matches remaining after the United clash.
Slot stated: "As we know from Mo, he's always working incredibly hard when he's fit and when he's injured to be back as soon as possible. That's what he's trying now. Usually he's back fitter than normal players from a minor injury. Indeed he has a minor injury; we expect him back for the end of the season but not Sunday."
Alisson's Setback Continues
The Reds will also be without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who suffered another injury setback that has sidelined him for the last six matches. His absence has been compounded by an injury to backup Giorgi Mamardashvili, who sustained a gash on his leg during the Merseyside derby. This forced third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to make his Premier League debut for Liverpool.
Slot commented on Alisson's situation: "Ali hasn't trained yet. He is very close to training with us; I have to hear from the medical staff if he's able to train today, tomorrow, or at the start of next week. We're very close but don't want to take any risks."
Growing Injury List
Slot acknowledged the mounting problems: "It's a bonus for every player that comes back. If you add Mo to it, it gets longer and longer." He also highlighted the difference between goalkeepers and outfield players: "There's a difference between a keeper and a player; they need to run more. So if the issue with an outfield player is when they are out it is the fitness levels, so there is a different issue with goalkeepers."
Manchester United currently sit three points ahead of Liverpool in the race for Champions League qualification, making Sunday's match a pivotal encounter. Liverpool will need to overcome their injury woes to keep their hopes alive.
