Dragons' Den investor and celebrated podcaster Steven Bartlett has shared invaluable career guidance that he wishes he had received during his own early professional journey. The 33-year-old entrepreneur, known for his sharp business acumen, insists that two specific investments are absolutely essential for success—and remarkably, they require no financial outlay whatsoever.
The Foundation of Success: Two Unshakeable Assets
Steven Bartlett, whose podcast The Diary of a CEO ranked second globally in Spotify Wrapped's 2025 most popular podcasts list, attributes much of his achievement to these personal investments. He argues that without prioritising them, he likely would not have reached his current status as a highly successful businessman and household name.
The Five Buckets Philosophy
Bartlett employs a metaphorical framework of "five buckets" that individuals must fill to unlock their potential. He explains that if you diligently fill these containers, the world truly becomes "your oyster." However, he emphasises that two of these buckets are paramount because they are impervious to external forces.
- Your Knowledge
Steven stresses that the sequence is critical. "You have to fill them in the right order because if you try and cheat the system, life will bring you back down to the level of your knowledge and skills," he advises. The first bucket, knowledge, is about what you know. This is immensely powerful because, in today's digital age, you can access virtually any information through library books and the boundless resources of the internet.
- What You Can Do
This second bucket represents the practical application of your knowledge. It involves dedicating time and effort to transform learned information into tangible skills. Bartlett clarifies, "When you learn something, and you apply it, it becomes a skill."
He asserts, "These are the first two buckets that no professional earthquake can ever unfill. No one can ever take away your knowledge and skills." This makes them the most crucial categories to focus on initially.
The Remaining Three Buckets
The subsequent buckets, while important, are more vulnerable:
- Your Resources: Typically acquired after developing advanced knowledge and skills.
- Your Network: Defined simply as "who you know," encompassing both personal and professional connections of equal significance.
- What the World Thinks of You: Essentially your reputation, or how others perceive and discuss you in your absence.
Bartlett issues a stark warning: "The last three buckets, the world can empty. They can decide to knock them over, take away your resources, take away your network, take away your reputation."
The Ultimate Investment
In contrast, knowledge and skills remain permanently secure. "They can never unfill your knowledge and skills, and so the best investment any of us can make is in our knowledge and skills," Bartlett concludes. "That's why I'm the biggest fan in the world of education."
His advice has resonated strongly with his audience. In the comments section of his post, followers expressed admiration and gratitude. One individual wrote, "Keep talking please—I will always listen, you always inspire—I always apply your advice." Another revealed, "I'm 44 and still cultivating the skills bucket," highlighting that there is no age limit to acquiring knowledge and putting it into practice.
